Program Note:
Education ranks high on the list of every family¡¯s priorities. Filmed over the course of an academic year, this is the story of the problems plaguing an ordinary middle school and the various coping strategies employed by teachers, parents and children. As they seek out individual solutions to a shared concern, they sometimes end up hampering each other¡¯s best efforts.
Director:
Before I took up documentary filmmaking at the Beijing Film Academy, I taught Chinese in a junior high in Wuhan. I look back fondly on that period of my life, and I often find myself reflecting upon how to reconcile the education given within the family and that provided in schools and the education system in general.
The education system is only but a tiny part of this documentary¡ªI decided to lay emphasis on the web of human relations and socialization process involved. The lack of communication I found lies at the heart of the problem and reflects both individual choices and contemporary values.
